Shop to subscribe to clothes

1/19/2025Developed by: Rent the Runway (2009), Nuuly

The idea is to create a clothing store or a chain of stores where customers can subscribe to the clothes in the store.

I explain myself.

Women and men like to dress differently every day (at least the majority) but the problem with this is that you have to spend a lot of money on clothes for it and also much of the clothes you buy you end up wearing only once or twice.

Also if you gain or lose weight it is also a problem because the clothes you bought no longer fit you.

Well, if we create a place where customers subscribe to be able to use the clothes of the place as if it were a video club it would be a good way to achieve these things:

Take care of the environment because not so much clothes would be produced but the clothes would rotate on the / customers of your business

Customers could continuously change clothes, styles and sizes if they need it

For a subscription of for example €70 a month, customers would forget about buying clothes forever.

The business should be focused on the rotation of clothes and the hygiene of this, so it should have a laundry section in the store itself.

Customers could for example as a rule take 15 different garments each time they visit the store and when they want they return them and take others.

Doing numbers €70 a month for 500 customers is €35,000 a month / €420,000 a year and you should have 50 garments per customer per year (winter and summer) in total 25,000 garments for 500 customers.

420,000 turnover per year % 25,000 garments gives you an average budget per garment of €16.8 but the premises and staff also have to be paid in addition to common expenses.

The advantage is that the garments from the first year you would have amortized them and yes you would have to continue investing in garments because you should also have more new customers but if a garment lasts on average 2 or 3 years the amount of benefit would come over time as the business is consolidated.

The business should be managed by software in which, for example, it tells you which customer has each garment at home at each moment or the customer who visits the store which garments they have to return and which ones they take this time.

The premises must be distributed by different spaces such as men or women (I would start this business only for women) styles of clothing (classic, young, modern, vintage, sports, gala etc) and sizes.

It should be located in a central or easily accessible location.

You have to study the behavior of customers to see what is the business model with qualities of this make you earn more money for example:

Give option to buy garments also at the price you mark in your business.

Obligados a devolver las prendas pasado un mes : si o no ?

Can they take 15 or 30 garments each time ?

To not get caught you must take into account the customers you have when subscribing new customers, the garments you handle in stock and loaned and the money you have to buy new garments because new customers mean new investment on your part that you must advance.

A good handicap of the business is that by buying such large quantities of clothes you can negotiate the price very well so that it comes out cheap and after 3 years you can open another store to put those clothes on sale with which you could almost recover the investment in it when you sell it.

Another very good thing you could do is an app to manage everything with your customers and that for example customers vote by images the new garments they want the store or chain to buy to lend them through the subscription because that way you would know what your customers demand to keep them happy.

In summary:

This is a good business model for these times but requires a large investment just for a store with 500 customers (let alone make it a chain of stores) but income is stable and continuous.

Maybe it would be a better business model with a higher ticket and focused on brand clothing so that people could dress in brand without spending much money (sharing clothes).
